The Avatar, The Guard, The Guru The Avatar The Avatar is a cat who is born into a Clan that StarClan has granted the ability to bend all four of the main elements. The Avatar acts as one of the main bridges between the physical world and StarClan as well as maintaining balance between the Clans from outside forces. He or she is usually a natural in the element of the Clan that they were born into. For instance, if an Avatar was born in FireClan, they would master Firebending very easily. In order to start mastering the other bending styles, the Avatar is allowed to travel to the other Clans to learn from masters. To stop an Avatar from entering a Clan is highly discouraged. The Avatar also has what is called the Avatar State. This happens when the Avatar experiences extreme emotional pain, anger, or fear. His or her eyes and claws glow white while his or her body often rises. In the Avatar State, the Avatar is at his/her most powerful and is able to control all elements regardless of the mastery level outside of the Avatar State. Young Avatars enter the Avatar State more frequently because of their emotional maturatity. As the Avatar grows older, usually they only enter the Avatar State when most needed. While in the Avatar State, he or she is also at their most vulnerable and can be damaged most easily. Access to StarClan and the previous Avatars is very important for the current Avatar. They act as guides. Having Spiritual Awakening is a very common ability for Avatars to have. Depending on the personality of the Avatar, he or she often attends the Medicine Cat gatherings and in times of trouble, the Avatar will attend the Gathering as well. Though the personality of the cat chosen to be the Avatar has a major role as well. If the cat is naturally laid back, then it will take a lot to move that Avatar to action. Though if a cat is naturally looking for a fight then that Avatar might have difficulty reaching the spiritual side of being an Avatar. There can only be one Avatar at a time. When one dies, another is born immediately. If the previous Avatar was born in FireClan, then the next Avatar will be born in AirClan. Then WaterClan and EarthClan, then back to FireClan. The Guard The Avatar often develops very strong friendships with others from the different Clans. Usually these friends become part of the Guard. The Guard typically consists of one to two cats from each Clan. If the Avatar was born into FireClan then the Guard will usually consist of an Airbender, an Earthbender, a Waterbender, and a nonbender. Sometimes, the Avatar will have a larger Guard if there are siblings though this doesn't happen often. The cats chosen to be in the Guard are free to come and go as they please. They are also free to stay in their Clans or stay with the Avatar in the mountain after he or she has mastered all of the elements. Another natural course throughout their lives is one of the Guard usually becomes closer to the Avatar than the others. The Avatar and this Guardian almost always become mates, when this happens, the two will usually settle down in the Avatar's original Clan or the Guardian's original Clan or even the Mountain. Depending on how much strife is in the Clans will often depend on how late or early the two settle down. Kits born from Avatars have an equal chance as other kits at being benders and nonbenders. The bending abilities of the kits are determined from the Avatar's original bending style as well as their mates. The Guru This cat is another cat that is free to travel throughout the Clans. He or she is very well respected, even more so than the Avatar at times. Though if he is not allowed to enter a Clan, he or she will not fight them. The Guru values peace above all and spends much of his or her time avoiding conflict. He or she always specializes in Spiritual Awakening and very often is a good friend to Avatars. His or her lifetime is double what most cats live. The Guru's apprentice is a cat who is born into any of the Clans. This cat is almost always a nonbender but is born with Spiritual Awakening. Usually when discovered, the Clan will send for either the Avatar, one of the Guardian's, or the Guru to see the kit themselves. The kit can choose to hide his or her abilities if desired and have as much of a normal life as possible. Though eventually, the cat is found out for what he/she truly is and the cat starts his or her training under the current Guru. Because Guru's live so long, it's not uncommon for the Guru's apprentice to do this or to start their training, leave, and then return at a later point in life. A full Guru will not have a mate as his or her focus is peace and further Spiritual Awakening. So a sign of a young Guru apprentice is for he or she having a mate and kits until they fully accept their calling. Other cats who are going through difficult times will often seek out the Guru for advice or guidance. Others seek out the Guru because they wish to live in peace themselves.
